1. Creating Your Emergency Escape Plan

You may have less than two minutes to safely exit your home once a fire starts. Use these steps to build your plan:

• Map it Out: Draw a floor plan of your home. Identify two ways out of every room (usually a door and a window).
• Check the Windows: Ensure all windows open easily and that screens can be quickly removed. If you have second-story bedrooms, consider purchasing emergency escape ladders.
• Clear the Path: Keep hallways and exits free of clutter like shoes, toys, or furniture that could trip you in the dark.
• Pick a Meeting Spot: Choose a fixed landmark a safe distance from the front of your home (e.g., a specific tree, the mailbox, or a neighbor’s porch) where everyone will gather.
• Practice “Low and Go”: In a fire, smoke rises. Practice crawling on your hands and knees where the air is cleaner.
